EMIKA 332x500 Emika | Drop The Other

Berlin based newcomer Emika releases a track entitled Drop The Other, that will have her name on the tip of everyone’s tongue in the upcoming year.  Comparisons to the XX, Fever Ray, The Knife, Burial and Circlesquare are already being floated around.  We will have to wait until we hear more of her work before we start making comparisons.  Drop The Other will be released on the 18th of January via Ninja Tune.  Check her press release below.

Drop The Other,” the first e.p. from Emika – and already making a late shout for one of the year’s most auspicious debuts. Even before release, Emika’s has received airplay from tastemaking DJs like Zane Lowe + Mary-Anne Hobbs. On “Drop The Other,” eerie, near-classical piano collides into glitched-out edits and skitering drum patterns, while speaker-shattering lows rub against Emika’s own hushed, cryptic vocals, the iconoclastic blend marking her an artist that makes a habit of defying expectation. Just when you think you know what you’re hearing, Emika flips the script: the cinematic sound architecture evokes the deepest techno, but the tempo moves too slow, the beats too jagged; the sub-bass, meanwhile, could shudder the most underground dubstep club, but it’s paired with haunting, syncopated vocal hooks that suggest Aaliyah’s work with Timbaland taken to its darkest extreme.

Bassnectar The Pixies | Where is My Mind [Bassnectar Remix]

Over the Christmas break I went through some tunes we had laying around and found this gem. Bassnectar has taken The Pixies most popular song, Where is My Mind, and given it new life. Chances are you heard of The Pixies but if you haven’t you might recognize this track from my favorite movie of all time, Fight Club. Great song and an even just the amount of energy we need to start this week off right.

Late of The Pier | Blueberry [Official Video]

The official video for Late of The Pier‘s track Blueberry, could pass for a bootleg unofficial video. It’s kinda annoying when you have a solid track and release a half ass video. But whatever, I guess they win because I’m posting this.

shaun boothe 3d 500x289 Shaun Boothe | Concepts feat Talib Kweli

Time after time we are impressed by each song Shaun Boothe releases.  The below track, Concepts, features Talib Kweli, and they go back and forth on a creative track.  It feels like these two actually were in the same studio and laid down their vocals.  If they did or didn’t it still continues the lineage of Boothe’s great work.

Christmas is upon us and Laura Marling returns with her first single “Goodbye England” from her upcoming sophomore effort which is in high demand around here at the cafe.
