Maroon Cafe Spotlight Exclusive| Marina & The Diamonds Interview
// June 4th, 2009 // Interviews
Marina and The Diamonds is without a doubt having one buzzworthy year, from her infectious hit single “Obsessions” to her latest breakout “Seventeen” the Wales via Ancient Greece native is on a path to being one of the most talked about artist by years end. As it stands now, 2009 will be noted as one of the best when it comes to music, and Marina (along with her Diamonds) should reign supreme. Marina was kind enough to stop by the cafe and discuss her distinctive name choice, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Oasis and a whole lot more……….
H.Q. Many people get the misconception that you’re a group, why did you choose Marina & The Diamonds?
Marina: My surname is Diamond in Greek. I wanted to bring some magic/remain mythical as an artist and separate my real self with my performing/creative self.
H.Q. A few of our readers really want to know what the song ‘Seventeen’ is really about?
Marina: People can interpret it however they like.. I’m not up for giving clues or answers. I am not very good at expressing myself personally in real life and so that is why I do it through songs and through songs alone.

H.Q. What’s with the fascination with Oasis? Wonderwall is a great tune, any plans on doing your own version (cover) while on tour?
Marina: Nope! No fascination as such, ha ha. I think I liked them when they broke when I was about 9 years old. They did make an incredible 1st/2nd album. Don’t really like doing covers (have u noticed how I use the Gwen Stefani one for EVERYTHING). I am rubbish at covers unless I am particularly taken by a song. I want to do Space and the Woods by Late of the Pier soon.
H.Q. Do you grow tired of the Kate Bush/Annie Lennox comparisons?
Marina: No, it’s extremely flattering. I feel embarassed that I was never truly inspired by either consciously though. Sometimes I just site them both as influences, as I know that’s what interviewers want to hear. I’m more inspired by life experience than other artists. But if you’re going to be inspired by someone, may as well be them.
H.Q. Your on track to becoming this years breakout female artist! did you expect the buzz to be this huge so soon?
Marina: It doesn’t feel like it’s that soon. I feel I’m going to be ready when the time comes. I’ve been planning this for 10 years. How can I not be ready.
H.Q. I read that you recorded the album and it should be done in October, will we be getting any new exclusive music before then besides the Crown Jewels Ep?
Marina: Maybe one or two previews. The album is in no way recorded yet though! Hoping for it to be completed in July and out in October.

H.Q. What is Marina doing in her spare time apart from making music?
Marina: Usually press or live rehearsals or gigs. If I have free time, I go jogging in the woods, I surf the internet, look for bargains on ebay..Just like everyone else.
H.Q. Lastly give me three things not related to your career that you want to accomplish by 2009.
Marina
1.Obtain true self confidence (NB- may take more than 6 months, ha ha)
2.Create stronger friendships and relationships &
3.Be physically healthy.
