Maroon Cafe Spotlight Interview :: Little Dragon
// September 25th, 2008 // Cafe Spotlight, Interviews

For the past year I’ve stated that Little Dragon was the best thing out of Sweden (sorry Lykke Li) to hit the music world in a very long time, and recently we introduced you to there sound here on the site. So it was a real pleasure to have them take a break from recording the new album and have a sit down with us here in the cafe to discuss and find out what Little Dragon is really all about.
H.Q. How did the name Little Dragon come about?
LD- Well it started as a nickname for Yukimi (our singer) because of the hot temper she is gifted with, but later we thought it fitted well to us as a band as well.
H.Q When going into doing this album what was the process like? any strange stories?
LD- We’ve been writing songs for a long long time and had a lot of material but no real plan of releasing it. After our friends label Off the Wall released a 7 inch, Peacefrog heard the music and wanted to release an album. Some songs on this album are really old… Constant surprises is the first song Yukimi and Håkan ever wrote together
H.Q. Yukimi you got your start with the Koop, what’s the biggest difference between the Koop and Little Dragon?
Yukimi- The biggest difference is that I’m singing my own lyrics and melodies and the music is the kind I love.
When I sang with Koop I was a featured artist singing there songs.
H.Q. Yukimi you have a voice that would make Billie Holiday & Bjork proud, have you always been that soulful?
Yukimi-Dont know…Ive haven’t thought about it. Ive always sung in pretty much the same way.
H.Q. Growing up was there always a goal to be in a group? or something that just happened?
LD- We lived together in collective for some years but playing in other projects as session players… But I think we all had the need of being more into the music and all of sudden there was Little Dragon.
H.Q. “Constant Surprises” seems to be the favorite with your fans, but “Test” is insanely beautiful, how did that creation take place?
LD- It started with a drumbeat that hypnotized Yukimi and out came a melody and after that a bass line and with some extra flavors from Håkan and Fredrik then the track was there!
H.Q. You did the Black Room Sessions and performed a real intimate version of “Twice” how was that experience?
LD- It was good and felt really magical
H.Q. You also did a brief stint in the states, any plans on coming back soon?
LD- Of course!!!! If there is any place we would love to come back to its the States! We played in San Fransisco, Santa Barbara and L.A and they were all really nice shows! The people were really really up for it!
H.Q. What music is the group currently listening to?
LD- We listen to so many different things…. That electric feel with MGMT is killer. YMO (yellow magic orchestra) is an old group from Japan that also has magic melodies.
H.Q. Lastly all the breakout groups and artist are coming from other countries, as a group does that put pressure on you?
LD- No…we have our own style. There is room for good music from all over the world!!! It’s better to be inspired than envious if it’s something really good.
