What other way to close up the week here at the cafe, then to have our first interview of the new year with New Look, the Electro-Pop/Soul duo out of the burrough of hits, Brooklyn New York.  If you’ve been a consistent reader of the site then you’d know how much I’ve grown to love the music Sarah Ruba & Adam Pavao are pumping out, not to mention they’re the only thing I’ve been listening to since there Free Ep release. Recently, they stopped by the cafe to discuss what exactly New Look is all about!

H.Q. I was a little intrigued by the name “New Look” briefly explain the history behind the title.

New Look:   New Look was the original name of our track Make It Over…however at the time we were sick of our band name, so we decided that since it had a nice ring, we’d adopt it.

H.Q. Sarah you really have a beautiful voice! where does the soulful part come from? also on the table are two keys, one key opens the door to your modeling career and the other your singing, which door do you open?

Sarah: Ummmmmmmmm I guessssss it comes from my jazz experience???? I don’t know. When I was first honing my voice I listened to a lot of Jeff Buckley and improvised a lot, so I guess it comes from inside (that sounds cheesy!)

Definitely the music/singing door. But a crossover is inevitable.

H.Q. What genre would you classify your sound in?

New Look: Future Pop

H.Q. With Brooklyn being the latest “Hot Spot” for quality groups, do you worry about being overlooked?

New Look: No point in worrying about that sort of thing, you just have to keep doing what you’re doing – the good stuff always prevails.

H.Q. You recently did a gig outside the states, what was that experience like?

Sarah: Good! The UK is funny, there’s always that one YOB who just happens to be at the club who won’t be happy until he gay-bashes the guy on stage (and Adam isn’t even gay! haha), but overall really great shows.

H.Q. Adam what instruments are you using for your live shows?

Adam: Sarah live loops vocals with a looping machine that plays the keys! and I keep the beat moving by live mixing vintage drum machines and synths. I’m planning on bringing in a bass guitar in for our next gigs.

H.Q. How is the album process going?

New Look: We just got back to our studio in Brooklyn after being away a lot this year, and we’re officially starting to record our first full length album. Obviously we can’t say when it’ll be done but we’re devoting tons of time over the next months, however we’re really psycheddd!!!!! about the process.

H.Q. I truly expect great things from you and I’m sure you may have heard this comparison to “The Bird & The Bee” or will soon, are you familiar with there music?

New Look: Never heard of ‘em, but we’re not exactly in the loop hahaha.

H.Q. What other artists are the two of you listening to at the moment?

New Look: Hall & Oates, Janet Jackson produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Betty Carter

H.Q. Lastly finish this sentence, If New Look was not making music they would be _______________??

New Look: Building a studio in the woods ….in which to make music.
