Surfer Blood| CMJ Wrap Up Event At Death By Audio

Surfer Blood 1

Yesterday we posted information about CMJ standouts and Kanine records newest signees Surfer Blood.  You know the hotly tipped Floridians who seem to have benefited more during last weeks events than our darlings from across the pond, The XX.  Apparently the buzz meter continues to rise and after last nights event and solid show, this quintet is destined to be one of the few surprises by years end.  Pics are after the jump.

DJ Premier vs. DJ Scratch | Classic Hip-Hop

PremiervsScratch DJ Premier vs. DJ Scratch | Classic Hip Hop

Yesterday will be a day that will live in my memory for a while.  I got to see the legendary DJ Premier and DJ Scratch perform at Red Hook Park in Brooklyn last night.  After a brief intro (like they need one), Scratch and Premier flipped a coin to see who would go first.  They decided the battle should be record for record.  Their set started off with old school songs.   Which was for the 30 and overcrowd.  From Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas to to Never Too Much by Luther Vandross.  After getting the older generation in it, they mixed and battle through early 90’s Hip-Hop (Nas, Biggie, Jeru The Damaja, Smif-n-Wessun) to the beginning forefathers of Hip Hop (KRS One, Run DMC, LL Cool J).  The show was only an hour and a half, but like I said earlier, it would be an experience I will never forget.  You had old people dancing with young people, folks were battling on the dance floor, I even saw a few cops nodding their heads.  It was something you never see in NY….Crowd participation and a crowd actually dancing and moving to the music.

These two guys are pioneers and the last few DJs alive.  When I say DJs, I mean the ability to play records that move the crowd, and being able to scratch and and mix.  One thing is for sure, Premier is no where in the same ball park as Scratch (check out this scene from Juice).  Now, I understand why the original bill was DJ Premier vs Pete Rock.  Either way, a classic night filled with legends and great music.  Check the jump for videos from last night.

Roots Picnic

26690243 26690248 slarge Roots Picnic

*My first draft of this article had about two computer scroll screens of words. I decided to narrow it down to one screen which unfortunately should have been on the site since last Sunday (sorry folks…won’t happen again)*

We arrived at the venue early, partly because I had forgotten to print my tickets and another part was getting in a bit early to soak up the feel. After waiting for a hour to get my tickets printed, we headed into the eye of the storm. As soon as we walked in The Roots started. Perfect timing?  Perhaps..or they knew London D was in the house (I kid I kid). Opening up they let us know we were in for a great show, and they had a few guest they wanted to introduce, The JabbaWokeeZ, Jordan Knight and Donnie Walberg of New Kids on The Block.  While the JabbaWokeeZ did their dance number, Donnie Walberg and Black Thought flowed back and forth.  It’s amazing, that I respect Donnie Walberg more as an actor then a musician.  Surprisingly, he did a good job.  The Roots went through a few hits, such as ‘Get Busy‘ (sans the locked up Peedi Crack), ‘The Web’, and Curtis Mayfield’s, ‘Move on Up.’  After tearing it up for about a half an hour, they let us know who was performing the rest of the day.

My Morning Jacket | Tyrone [Erykah Badu Cover]

My Morning Jacket Erykah Badu

While President Bush is avoiding kissing Sho Nuff’s Converse, we are in a nostalgic mood in the cafe. Yesterday we were listening to Erykah Badu’s discography and remembered how talented she is (was?).  One of her most well known songs is ‘Tyrone.’  We went and dug in the crates for My Morning Jacket’s brilliant cover of  Erykah Badu’s, ‘Tyrone.’  If you recall, during their summer tour, MMJ was covering Tyrone during their shows. Ms. Badu apparentely got word of this and joined them on stage at one of their shows in Dallas (Video Here).   This isn’t retro, but it is a slight throwback. Enjoy!

Maroon Cafe/Itunes Live From Soho Featuring Adele

adele1 Maroon Cafe/Itunes Live From Soho Featuring Adele

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins or you may know her as just Adele, made an impromptu stop in New York City yesterday for a small performance at the Apple Store in Soho.  Adkins came out to a surprising crowd of many (most I’ve seen since they cut the ribbon on opening day) and was a little taken back by the abundance of support.

A solo acoustic version of “Right As Rain” kicked things off for what was a very intriguing set, what I do admire about the BRIT school attendee, is her ability to be open with her fans.  On a few occasions she broke off into stories, one was her location at the time of President Elect- Obamas speech, and while the world was celebrating, Adele was by a campfire (first to be exact) with her mum.

Very rarely these days, does an artist blessed with a vocal ability capture you on the first note and if there were any doubters in the house last night, then there views surely changed.  Now no show goes without a minor flaw, and apparently a darling tune of mine “Daydreamer” is clearly not Adeles, forgetting the words solidified that. However showing her true genuine character, she agreed to play it over again which also included a cute sing along from the crowd. For a free gig, it exceeded my expectations and to say “cafe worthy” would be an understatement.

CMJ Festival Showcase :: The Bodega Girls

bodegagirls CMJ Festival Showcase :: The Bodega Girls

Fresh off a great weekend attending the CMJ festival and after leaving The Knitting Factory who had an array of talented local bands only to be outshined by the last minute addition and performance from Lightspeed Champion. I arrived at the next destination 205 Chrystie where there seemed to be quite a few attendees waiting for the next act. The Bodega Girls (cheesy 80’s girl band or local corner store not included) are a Soul/Afro-beat/Electro group out of Boston Massachusetts, who describe there sound as Bob Dylan meets Junior Senior.

Former Read Yellow bandmates Evan Kenny or Evrock if you prefer & Michelle Kay have added Jacob Ottis and MAC to create what some would say at the event, a FRENZY in the music business. Imagine a psychedelic delusional acid trip while Bodega girls pranced on staged and into my psyche, an assortment of all sounds mixed into one. Although there set was short, I’m sure that these lads will be spontaneously combusting onto a stage and dancefloor near you. Here is there first single “She’s Into Black Guys” a tune that reminds me of a frat party gone terribly wrong.
