As the decade ends today and we take a look back on ’09, this will go down as “The Year Everything Changed.” To sum our twelve months up into one word we’ll go with “Growth,” it’s been a hard time (extremely) trying to balance personal life and business around here but somehow we managed to have a pretty successful year. While I lost a few things that were close to me, one thing that kept my mental intact (barely) was music. Here’s our top albums that kept us going strong.
Metric- Fantasies- Resurgance in true Canadian form! Emily and crew not only held down our top songs through mid-year, they managed to stick it out to the end.
Mumford & Sons- Sigh No More- We’ve been on board when they were unknowns and playing shows in the smallest of places. Our Fresh Faces put out an amazing debut and kept the folk genre steady.
La Roux- La Roux- Say what you want but this is one fine Pop album! from start to finish we guarantee you’ll agree after it’s all said and done.
Fanfarlo- Reservoir- An array of sounds so beautifully mixed together, it was quite hard to not love this quintet.
Daniel Merriweather- Love and War- Exceeded our expectations! you want proof? check Water and a Flame (featuring Adele) & Red, then get back to us.
The XX- The XX- The most talked about band who literally came out of nowhere. This will be a highlight for years to come when we look back at ’09.
Miike Snow – Miike Snow – An album that I can play from front to back with no problems. Miike Snow has the right blend of pop and lyrics on this self titled album. Keep in mind these are the same people who created Toxic for Britney Spears.
KiD CuDi – Man On The Moon – When I first heard this album, I was thinking what kind of weed does Kid Cudi smoke…and where can I get some to understand this album. After a few weeks of letting it sit, I decided to give it a listen and haven’t put it down since. Definitely a hit or miss album. But a brave solid debut nonetheless.
Theophilus London – This Charming Mixtape – Granted this was a mixtape and not a full featured album, it was still one of the best cuts to come out in 2009. Is there anything Mr. London can’t rhyme over? He is the Andre 3000 of the new generation of rappers.
Melanie Fiona – The Bridge – US Female artist are a rarity in the R&B game. Not any more, Melanie Fiona’s debut CD proves she is a force to be reckoned with.
Muse – The Resistance - Like fine wine, Muse gets better with each CD they release.
Bat For Lashes – Two Suns – Each track on this album sounds like it was built for a soundtrack to a movie. Epic tunes.
