Very rarely does an artist leave an impact on me such as Choklate, Seattles golden voice left her mark back in 2006. Fast forward two years later and I vowed to let the world know how special of artist she really is, blessed with a vocal ability that can shine light on the darkest of days, Choklate along with Peter Hadar was one of the main reasons for Cafemaroon.com, so it was a pleasure to have her swing by the cafe to discuss how things have been since her stellar self titled debut “Choklate”. We spoke about her recent touring with Boyz II Men, spirituality, life & a possible move to the Big Apple! in one of the most heartfelt interviews since our launch.
H.Q. Now for those fans who are new to your sound just give them a brief intro on who Choklate is?
I’m a really regular chick that happened to fall into my destiny that being music and writing. I’m most honestly a mesh of hip hop and young soul music.
H.Q. Last time we spoke everything was just starting out, how has the journey been since?
It’s been a roller coaster my momma promised me life would be. Each year gets better though and I’m really excited at the possibilities. I’ve gotten to do really wonderful things and meet really wonderful people some of whom I’ve admired a great deal and I just look forward to the future, bumps, bruises and all…
H.Q. Boyz II Men is a pretty big deal, explain that experience and feeling opening up for them?
It was a great honor and the crowd was extremely wonderful to me. I had a really nice time and was appreciative of being included in such a cool show. I totally danced backstage to all the old school grooves and it was a real kick. I had fun.
H.Q. So good to see that things are moving in the right direction for you and besides the music, how is Choklate spiritually?
Spiritually I’m like any other person who is trying to walk and stay connected to their purpose and God. It’s tough. I make TONS of mistakes, I’m sad sometimes, angry sometimes, irritated with life sometimes, I complain when I forget how blessed I am and tell God I’m sorry when I think about it and remember. I try to run the show regularly and forget that he’s really in control…and then get checked in one way or another but overall I know who keeps me going. I know where my blessings come from and I know why I’m where so no matter how many times I fall, I just do my best to get up, stay positive, cry when I need to and get on with it. My mother and auntie keep me in check and on point. I’d be a wreck more often if it was not for them.
H.Q. You’ve always been one of my favs since I first got a copy of your debut, how is the sophomore album coming along? and when can I get it first before the fans lol?
HAHAHA…I’m going to do my best to get a nice pre-release to the people before it’s actually released but it’s slated for a 1st quarter ’09 release. Press info to come really soon. It’s coming along like life is, full of ups and downs, good and bad and stories that should last a lifetime. I’m enjoying the journey, most of the time.
H.Q. Your no newcomer to the Big Apple, any plans on moving here?
I keep hearing that I should. I’ve been thinking about it. I’m scared though. I like the slower pace and more country feel of Seattle. I enjoy big, little city rather than little, big city if that makes any sense. I may come for extended stays but Seattle is a place I can always retreat to where the folks know me and my ENTIRE family is here. So we’ll see God says, “Life has it’s twist and turns” and ultimately the Universe knows way more than I. As For now though, I love living in Seattle.
H.Q. What are you doing in your spare time these days? Reading, riding horses as often as I can, hiking, swimming, tennis.
H.Q. I have to admit you did put me on to Alice Smith and for that I thank you!! are there any new favorite artist that you’re enjoying now?
Yeah, I really dig her music. Look forward to another record. I love Janelle Monae and Solange right now actually…they are edgy and imperfect perfection. Their lyrics speak a story or an emotion more than a hook and beat and I really find myself really enjoying their music. Avant’s record is good ‘ol R&B and I like it as well.
H.Q. Where do you see this genre of music going in the next few years?
Hell, I dunno.
H.Q. Lastly give us a rundown of what to expect from you in 2009?
