Holly Miranda is set to release “The Magicians Private Library” tomorrow on XL recordings. We’ve got an early listen and we must say it’s a very soothing Lp. So while the Jealous Girlfriends frontwoman may be overshadowed with all the current heavier promoted releases, familiarize yourself with this album. A surprisingly brilliant piece of work, Tracklisting and first single “Waves” is after the jump.
According to one of our readers, when we posted the video for “Elephants” by Warpaint last week it apparently was there first video ever shot but didn’t see release until late last year. With “Stars” to follow, well despite the confusion of which is which “Beetles” has surfaced and we’re hoping this is as legit as it comes.
We tipped you off on Lonelady last week and the buzz has been positive, here she sits down to discuss her musical process. “Nerve Up” via Warp is in stores February 23rd.
I hope I’m given some oxygen to breathe, not expecting things to catapult into some uncontrollable state immediately. I want a slow burn, find it quite horrible that artists are rammed down your throat and you don’t have a choice whether you like them or not. The element of spending time and getting to know artists is gone.
Warpaint was just a few votes away from breaking into our Fresh Faces list, there’s a real gravitating experience when it comes to anything they release. A real ethereal sound that just drags you right in. As if any more accolades were needed, there latest video for “Elephants” is just as pleasant. Expect a full length soon, in the meanwhile there Ep is available now.
Marina and her Diamonds strip it down a bit for an acoustic version of “Hollywood,” which is the latest single from her upcoming “Family Jewels” album. We’ve gotten to a point where if Marina sung the alphabet upside down, we’d still like it! she’s going to be a major force this year and this just the tease. Get on board because the train’s leaving and our Welsh diva is in control.
Dark and mysteriousness attracts many and when it fuses with music then you definitely have to pay attention. I got tipped off on Emika a few weeks back thanks to my compadre extraordinaire London D, needless to say an investigation pursued. The now Berlin native is causing quite a stir with her sound and early eerily comparisons similar to Aaliyah. While the year of ‘10 is filled with contender after contender and if her recent single “Drop The Other” is what we can expect more of, then you just may have to add another entry to that list. In one of our more personal interviews Emika sat down with me to discuss her sound, her distinction from female singers of today and an event that nearly took her life.

As we come to another decade and another 10 years of music awaits us, our doors on ‘09 have officially closed. While we had a solid year for a newbie, we can guarantee that 2010 will be an even bigger year for us at the Cafe. Although some of our picks for Fresh Faces last year took a sabbatical or just plain fell off the face of the planet (literally,) we’ve been on a hot streak of who to watch and what to expect in the new year. Predicting half of BBC and NME sounds list well before it was announced should give you an inclination on how serious we take our positions here. Now with that being said, here’s our picks for artists who’ll be making a splash over the next twelve months.
Shins frontman James Mercer and Danger mouse release there first single “High Road” from the upcoming collab project Broken Bells which is also the name of the infamous duo. Expect the album to hit stores on March 9, 2010. Never thought we’d see these two working together and after a quick listen it sounds like our Shins void may be filled for the time being.
Stream: Broken Bells- High Road
California based The Soft Pack have released there follow up video to the pulsating single “Answer To Yourself” which has been on repeat since it first hit our inbox. Not sure what’s going on here but for some reason pizza and the movie Clerks sounds perfect after watching. Self titled debut in stores February 2nd, 2010 on Kemado.
