John Forte Featuring Talib Kweli & Picaso | Homecoming [Live Video]

This past Sunday at Brooklyn Bowl in NYC, John Forte, Talib Kweli and Picaso did their own rendition of Kanye’s Homecoming. Is it just me or when Picaso was talking he sounded like Jay-Z? Maybe it’s just me.

Jesse Boykins III| Shine [Video]

Jesse Boykins III returns with his latest single “Shine” from his well slept on album “The Beauty Created.” While this video is more suitable for warmer weather, a break from the cold afternoon and this track on repeat should fit the bill. Album is in stores now.

The Drums| Let’s Go Surfing [Video]

Brooklyn’s latest buzzworthy band The Drums have shot a video for there catchy single “Let’s Go Surfing.” Not much really going on here besides one very long American Apparel commericial a light jog along the shore. Not what we expected, but this is one fine tune which will sure to make a few Summer mixtapes next year.

The Drums| Let’s Go Surfing

The Drums

The Drums are a duo based out of Brooklyn via Florida (strange) and the latest buzzworthy band of the moment. There addictive 50’s pop single with a modernized twist “Lets Go Surfing” is as good as it gets when we think of how Summer treated us these past few months. Definitely providing high and low marks but all in all we can look back and say this was one to remember. Enjoy, because come Monday what you just read will be a thing of the past and “Dear Autumn” arrives.

DJ Premier vs. DJ Scratch | Classic Hip-Hop

PremiervsScratch DJ Premier vs. DJ Scratch | Classic Hip Hop

Yesterday will be a day that will live in my memory for a while.  I got to see the legendary DJ Premier and DJ Scratch perform at Red Hook Park in Brooklyn last night.  After a brief intro (like they need one), Scratch and Premier flipped a coin to see who would go first.  They decided the battle should be record for record.  Their set started off with old school songs.   Which was for the 30 and overcrowd.  From Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas to to Never Too Much by Luther Vandross.  After getting the older generation in it, they mixed and battle through early 90’s Hip-Hop (Nas, Biggie, Jeru The Damaja, Smif-n-Wessun) to the beginning forefathers of Hip Hop (KRS One, Run DMC, LL Cool J).  The show was only an hour and a half, but like I said earlier, it would be an experience I will never forget.  You had old people dancing with young people, folks were battling on the dance floor, I even saw a few cops nodding their heads.  It was something you never see in NY….Crowd participation and a crowd actually dancing and moving to the music.

These two guys are pioneers and the last few DJs alive.  When I say DJs, I mean the ability to play records that move the crowd, and being able to scratch and and mix.  One thing is for sure, Premier is no where in the same ball park as Scratch (check out this scene from Juice).  Now, I understand why the original bill was DJ Premier vs Pete Rock.  Either way, a classic night filled with legends and great music.  Check the jump for videos from last night.

Florence & The Machine| Cosmic Love

Florence and The Machine

Florence Welch has already achieved more hype than most new artists could only dream of.  Two monstrous singles,  a critics choice award (same award Adele won last year) and one of the most anticipated albums this year.  Florence once again shows why all the above accolades were deserving with her latest effort “Cosmic Love” from the eagerly awaited “Lungs” in stores July 6th.  Emotional-laiden lyrics accompanied by a stellar drum pattern.  Welch is evolving into something special and with catchy effective pop songs like this, how can you doubt it.

Chairlift| Bruises (Official Video)

Finally we can shed some light on an official Chairlift video for “Bruises” which is by far the biggest guilty pleasure song of last year. Only problem is we’re in 2009! this piece of work is well overdue. While some may consider the trio from Brooklyn one hit wonders, “Does You Inspire You” there debut album, had a few quality tunes worth noticing. What looks like a surveillance job gone wrong, turns out to be some sort of orgy! not sure we expected this but anything with Caroline in the equation is worth a few views.

White Rabbits| Percussion Gun

Jenny Owens music was presented to us over the weekend, the Brooklyn native has been creating quite a stir amongst critics and her buzz continues to grow. A hometown gal that we surely look forward to hearing more from.
