In honor of The Hip Hop Honor awards airing tonight on VH1, we decided to jump back into the Delorean and take a trip to an era that was called “The Golden Age Of Hip Hop”. Remember when Az sent us on a ride to Sugar Hill? Black Moon asked us “How Many Emcees” must get dissed, Brand Nubian told females to “Slow Down”. Cool C was living the “Glamorous Life” and Digable Planets introduced themselves by telling us that there “Cool Like Dat”, we traveled with Tribe Called Quest on an “Award Tour”, Eric B and Rakim was getting “Paid in Full”, and The Artifacts was on the wrong side of the tracks.
Gang Starr had “Mass Appeal”, Ice Cube let us know that “Today Was A Good Day” or what about the feeling that we got when Method Man hooked up with Mary J Blige with “You’re All I Need To Get By? Yeah we miss that feeling and those times, Nas was young and told us “The World Was Yours”, Slick Rick gave us a message with “Hey Young World”, Special Ed had it Made and Kool G Rap gave us a vivid story of the “Streets Of New York”.
Biggie rose from rags to riches with “Juicy” Tupac showed us a softer side with “Keep Ya Head Up”, DMX ripped up the Tunnel (R.I.P) with “Get At Me Dog” and Jay-Z used an Annie sample for “Hard Knock Life”. Moments that will stand the test of time and always be remembered.
In a true ode and repspect to a culture and genre that in the beginning was told would never progress and succeed and almost thirty years later since The Sugar Hill Gang rocked the stage with “Rappers Delight” Rap/Hip Hop still lives on.
One of our favorite cuts from the past and it really sums up everything that you just read!!!
